Think You’re Too Old for CrossFit? Barcelona Drop-In with a Legend

🌍 Translate to your language

Drop-in at CrossFit Max Grit Barcelona with Silvia Sambròs – Spain’s #1 athlete in the 50–54 category.

I discovered CrossFit at 33, and I lost the count of how many times I’ve told myself I was too old for it. Especially after watching the under-30 crew doing 500 unbroken bar muscle-ups. I’d think, “Well… that’s it for me. Retired before my career even started.”

If you’re between 30 and 45 — which I think you are, because that’s my audience sweet spot — I’ve got good news and bad news for you.
Bad news first (always): From now on, you’ll need to manage that little voice in your head that uses age as an excuse to limit your potential.
And the good news? I’ve got a serious success story to inspire you.

Is age a limiting factor in CrossFit? Can you build muscle after 40? Does an injury define you? Is there an ideal body type for CrossFit?

According to Silvia Sambròs, Spain’s number one athlete in the women’s 50–54 division and 13th in Europe, the answer to all of that is: NO. She’s living proof. She trains. She competes. She has overcome injuries. She doesn’t have the “ideal body” — she has her body, and it does the work.

Come with me to CrossFit Max Grit Barcelona for a drop-in session with this absolute powerhouse — a pioneer in the Barcelona CrossFit scene and a walking, talking rebuttal to every excuse you’ve ever made.

My Drop-In

Barcelona, oh Barcelona. Big, busy… but always charming.
The box is right in the heart of the city. I was staying near Girona station and walked there on a sunny Sunday morning. For a moment, I asked myself if maybe I should just live here — beautiful architecture, culture on every corner, happy people, and, of course, tapas.
Max Grit has been an affiliate for over 8 years, with two locations in Barcelona. The Cornella unit is over 350m², well-equipped and super stylish. Right at the entrance, there’s a hallway covered in testimonials and community memories. Chalkboards, a rustic whiteboard, erasers — everything already telling the story of the box and its people.

WOD

Silvia was my coach that day — energetic, funny, and all smiles.

Strength – EMOM 12’
M1: cardio your choice (for me everything but assault bike/mini heart attack)
M2: 8 Bradford Press + BHN Press
M3: 8 BB Back Squad + FR lunges
M4: 10 supine leg raises

METCON – Every 3’ x 5 sets
12 Front Rack Box Step Ups
6 Push Press

Cool DownOn a 12’ clock complete: 4 – 5 Rounds
6/6 Dumble side rotation
6/6 Skater Jump ( I always feel like a jerk doing that)
30” Weighted wall sit

A light, fun-paced WOD — just like that Sunday morning

The community? Warm, chatty, full of life — just the way I like it.

Meeting Silvia

The first CrossFit affiliate in Spain — and one of the first in continental Europe — was founded in Barcelona in 2011. Today, the city is a CrossFit hub, with over 30 affiliates. Silvia is a relic from that era — one of the pioneers.

She was a runner, and in 2012, at the peak of her 40s, she had to quit due to a knee injury. That’s when she looked for a coach to strengthen her legs and — boom — her heart got hit by CrossFit. The ambition to become an athlete and compete was born.

After class, she gave me a quick interview to share her story and how CrossFit has evolved in Spain since 2012.

She told me how much the sport has grown in the past 13 years. Back then, everyone knew each other, and the community mirrored the American model — tight, unified. Today, it’s more divided by box and region.

👉 Click on the video to watch the full interview — she talks about coming back from injury, building muscle after 40, and the evolution of the sport in Spain.

For me, one of the most magical things about being part of such a young sport is meeting people like Silvia — people who helped shape it, wore the shirt, stayed through the ups and downs, and watched CrossFit grow and evolve.

And beyond all that, she’s just one of those women who inspire. Who beat injuries. Who broke the age taboo. And proved us that excuses are just stories we tell ourselves. ¡Olé, Silvia!
