Double Shift: fitness, Tech and art in Amsterdam
Even though I have my membership and unlimited access at my CrossFit box, I still can’t let go of my Urban Sports Club membership. It’s my golden ticket to so many other activities in different cities around the world — a yoga class, indoor cycling, or even a swim. For someone who gets bored doing the same thing every day or travels often, it’s basically a passport to the city’s sport scene.
I have been to a lot of gyms around the world, but Double Shift in Amsterdam is truly something else. Every time, I’m blown away by how beautiful, well-designed, and unique the space is.
📍 Located in the heart of the Jordaan
Right in the middle of the Jordaan—Amsterdam’s coziest, most charming neighborhood, full of canals, indie cafés, and old buildings—Double Shift is built inside a former sugar refinery.
From the outside, it looks industrial. But once you’re in, it feels more like an art gallery than a gym. Exposed brick walls, lush plants, natural light, modern art, and the kind of vibe that makes you want to stay after your workout.
🏋️♀️ Modern machines
All the equipment is TechnoGym, brand-new and super intuitive. You log in via their app, and it tracks everything—sets, reps, even your range of motion. After two reps, the screen gives you a live graph showing how you’re moving, and you follow that for the rest of your set. It blew my mind.
It was totally new for me, and I loved it. It’s like the machines coach you—and if you’re a data nerd like me, it’s amazing to have all your workout history right there.
Besides machines, there are stations for free movement, mobility work, and functional training, so it doesn’t feel rigid or boring.
💪 Group classes + sauna (Amsterdam-style)
They also offer group classes—Strength, Circuit, HIIT. The room is small, but the instructors are solid, and the quality is high.
And yes, there’s a mixed sauna, and people often go nude (very Amsterdam). It’s relaxed, not weird—just part of the culture here, if you don’t feel comfortable just bring an extra towel and you will be fine. Perfect if you need a recovery day.
💻 space to hang
There’s a big table and couches where people chill post-workout with a protein shake or a coffee and open their laptops. It’s not loud or busy—just a great atmosphere.
For those living or working remotely in Amsterdam, or just passing through, it’s the kind of place where you might end up staying longer than planned.
🧳 For travelers & digital nomads
If you’re in Amsterdam for a few days, a week, or a month, Double Shift is perfect for drop-ins. They offer day passes, week passes, or 4-week access without commitment. You can train, shower, open your laptop, drink a smoothie, and feel like you’re part of the local vibe—even if you’re just passing through. It’s not your average gym. It’s beautiful, smart, cozy, and low-key inspiring.
If you’re in the Jordaan, trust me—go check it out.
